Around 1800, one of the most influential architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged—that of built spaces as technical devices. Climate, morality, and comfort are the three main themes of this study, and each is vividly examined in separate chapters through synchronous comparison and with the help of examples. The emergence of corresponding metaphors, knowledge, and construction forms is traced over a period of about 70 years. The author focuses particularly on the operative dimension of architecture. Thus, the book provides a historical perspective on a key topic for the future of architecture. The book is aimed at readers interested in architecture, technology or the cultural history of building and living. Klima, Moral und Komfort bilden die tragenden Themen dieser Untersuchung, die in je eigenen Kapiteln im synchronen Vergleich und anschaulich mithilfe von Beispielen untersucht werden. Verfolgt wird das Aufkommen entsprechender Metaphern, Wissensinhalte und Bauformen über eine Zeitspanne von rund 70 Jahren. Einen besonderen Fokus legt der Autor dabei auf die operative Dimension der Architektur. Damit leistet das Buch einen historischen Blick auf ein Zukunftsthema der Architektur. Quantité d'ouvrages traitent des divers éléments qui composent les jardins. Aucun, à ce jour, n'a exploré le plus simple et, pourtant, si présent : le gazon. Ce dernier a fait l'objet de nombreux livres techniques, mais n'a pratiquement jamais été étudié comme motif essentiel du jardin, à la fois structurant et parmi les plus sensibles. Seul un petit essai de Jean-Claude-Nicolas Forestier, en 1908, initie la réflexion. C'est lui qui m'a lancée sur les traces de l'herbe rase, au vert si caractéristique.0Or, les images et, surtout, les écrits anciens révèlent toute sa place dans la culture occidentale. C'est le sujet du livre de Lucie Nicolas-Vullierme qui propose de parcourir, selon différents prismes, l'histoire du gazon, en l'accompagnant d'une réflexion plus personnelle.0Son texte alterne des parties strictement scientifiques, s'appuyant sur des documents historiques précis, avec des approches plus lyriques qui tentent de saisir la portée symbolique de l'herbe maintenue courte. Plusieurs entretiens avec des paysagistes et des architectes en chef des monuments historiques complètent ce panorama richement illustré.

The importance of place 'as a unique spatial identity' has been recognized since antiquity. Ancient references to the 'genius loci', or spirit of place, evoked not only the location of a distinct atmosphere or environment, but also the protection of this location, and implicitly, its making and construction. This volume examines the concept of place as it relates to architectural production and building knowledge in early modern Europe (1400-1800). The places explored in the book's ten essays take various forms, from an individual dwelling to a cohesive urban development to an extensive political territory. Within the scope of each study, the authors draw on primary source documents and original research to demonstrate the distinctive features of a given architectural place, and how these are related to a geographic location, social circumstances, and the contributions of individual practitioners. The essays underscore the distinct techniques, practices and organizational structures by which physical places were made in the early modern period.
